The Payment Card Industry (PCI)Data Security Standard council, made up of Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and other credit card companies, has recently issued new requirements designed to improve security on retail point-of-sale card readers, unattended kiosks and payment terminals, according to Computerworld. This latest version of the PIN Transaction Security (PTS) requirements includes three new modules for payment device vendors and their customers to secure sensitive card data:

One module contains requirements for the secure reading and exchange of data on payment card devices

Another spells out the security standards that device vendors will be expected to follow regarding unattended point-of-sale devices

The third module involves a new set of requirements for wireless-enabled payment card devices

The council’s PTS standard will provide vendors with a set of guidelines for ensuring the security of cardholder data on payment devices. Be prepared to start implementing the requirements in 2011. The PTS standards apply only to payment card devices. The council has a similar but separate set of standards for merchants and payment processors and one for developers of payment applications. The council is set to announce new versions of both those standards later this year.

These updated PTS standards come at an opportune time, as the concerns are growing in the retail industry about the security of payment card devices. Fraud and data theft resulting from the use of illegal card skimmers attached to payment card devices has been a hot topic of concern and the PTS updates will hopefully ease our worry about these potential risks.
